Local market hits fresh low

Local stocks were dragged down by weakness across all sectors today after falls on European markets on Friday.

The All Ordinaries index tumbled by as much as 2 per cent to hit a fresh low for the year.

But it reversed some of the steep losses to close down only 1.5 per cent at 5,092.

The ASX 200 narrowly missed closing below 5,000 for the second time in a week, and finished 80 points down at 5,003.

Property shares slumped after leading real estate trust GPT slashed its profit forecast because of the effects of the credit crisis.

GPT shares lost 14.6 per cent to close at $2.10.

St George Bank's reliance on domestic, non-retail deposits has most likely prompted the move to raise its standard variable mortgage rate by 0.2 of a per cent, a banking analyst says.

 

변동부동산금리를 0.2센트 올릴거라네여...

 

The increase takes the bank's variable home loan rate to 9.67 per cent.

The rise will add $40 a month to a $250,000 mortgage.

Banking research firm East and Partners' principal analyst, Paul Dowling, has told ABC 1's Midday Report that St George is probably the most challenged of the big five banks because of its funding mix.

"They have the highest proportion of funding sourced from offshore wholesale markets," he said.

"It's in that space that the margin squeeze is particularly tight, so they're more reliant on non-retail deposit monies funding their lending books domestically here in Australia."

Mr Dowling says he expects other banks to follow St George's lead by increasing their standard variable mortgage rates.

He says the fallout from the United States subprime mortgage crisis has led to a significant increase in funding costs.

"Our expectation would be that the other four majors in the market will also look to increase retail lending rates," he said.

"It's a systemic issue for most of the banks.

"Their margins are being squeezed."

Economists say the latest data on job advertisements shows employers are continuing to react to difficult economic conditions.

ANZ's monthly job advertisements survey shows that adverts in newspapers and online fell by a seasonally-adjusted 3 per cent in June.

That follows a 1.7 per cent fall in May.

 

요즘 직업구하기 힘들다고 하네여...경제가 어려워서요...ㅜ.ㅜ

취업률이 계속해서 감소하고 있습니다...ㅜ.ㅜ

 

ANZ economist Sally Auld says it is likely that there will be a moderate slowdown in hiring over the coming six months.

 

다음 6개월도 계속 떨어질 예정이라네여..

 

"I think what we're really seeing is employers pulling back a little bit in terms of their demand for labour," she said.

 

"Uncertainty about how the global economy is playing out, tighter financial conditions and probably also some uncertainty about the outlook for the Australian economy [is] just making employers a little bit more cautious as we move into the new financial year."

 

Ms Auld says employers are becoming more cautious in the face of global economic uncertainty and tough financial conditions, but they are unlikely to start laying off workers in droves.

 

"The broad idea is it's telling us that employment growth should ease modestly over the next six to 12 months," she said.

 

"But I think the important thing is we are not expecting a significant slowing in terms of labour market activity."
